CARVED SNUFFBOX OF AGATE - CHINA - QIANLONG PERIOD - 2 PERSONAGES AROUND A LONGEVITY MUSHROOM
Gorgeous flacon snuffbox of carved agate, representing a scene of two personages around a longevity mushroom. Other mushroom complete the decor. The two sides of the snuffbox are carved. An old beared scholar and a child (pupil or servant) are sit down under a tree. In front of them, there is a longevity mushroom. On the other side, we can see three other mushrooms, stylized as fishes that seem to swim. This snuffbox comes from China and dates from the end of the 18th century, Qianlong period. The sculptor very subtly used the brown nuances and shades of the stone to compose his low-relief, et the result is really successful. The snuffbox features its cap of agate, with its stem of ivory.
